christmas party invites - your opinion please - Sharon Santoni

Most years we have a christmas party here; a brunch or cocktails, a moment to enjoy the house dressed up for christmas and fill it to bursting with friends and family.

This year, although guests have been told the date, I'm a little late sending out my invites.? I like to do these by hand, it is no big deal.? If I keep to a simple design and use water colours and a metallic pen, I can? produce the twenty or so that I need in just a couple of hours in front of the fire .? You can see them taking shape in the collage shots below.

I want a fun image that can slip into an envelope, with space to write the invite behind.? They may have a ribbon on the top, not sure yet.? Working around a christmas tree idea, I have come up with three designs, but can't decide which to choose.

Can you help me please?!

First up, the classic christmas tree, with pink and silver polka dot lights and?

standing in a pink bucket ....

second choice, the pink and silver tree, with pink and silver baubles and a ... pink and silver bucket ...

and lastly the third option in grey and gold ...

Opinions are divided in this house,?

?I have a favourite but I'm not sharing :)

?I'd love to know which one, if any, you would choose

Merci beaucoup!

PS.? Late this evening before I turn off the computer for the night ...
THANK YOU!!
You are quite amazing!

I still won't say which tree I prefer, but I would like to put the records straight about my drinking habits!? The little glass does not contain some mysterious French liqueur .... it is simply the glass I was using for washing out my paintbrush? :)

And for your questions about the picture of our house in the snow, it was taken last year about this time.? So far we haven't had any snow this year, but who knows? maybe for Christmas!

Chinese man avoids prison for New York Fed cyber theft

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Chinese computer programmer was spared prison time and sentenced to six months of house arrest on Tuesday after he admitted to stealing millions of dollars of software code from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Bo Zhang, 33, had pleaded guilty in May, after telling investigators that he had downloaded the code to an external hard drive and taken it home. He also pleaded guilty to a separate count of immigration fraud.

Zhang's case had raised security concerns among congressional investigators and others that the New York Fed might be vulnerable to cyber attacks.

The government has said the code that Zhang downloaded, designed for a system that helps keep track of its finances, cost $9.5 million to develop.

"I just want to apologize to the government, the court, my previous employers, my clients for causing this mess," Zhang, dressed in a blue shirt and gray slacks, told U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe at a hearing in Manhattan federal court. Zhang said he was "terribly sorry."

Zhang had been cooperating with the investigation, which began after he told a colleague he had lost one drive holding the code. Bank officials later alerted the FBI.

His sentence includes three years of supervised release, including the home confinement. No fine was imposed. Zhang could eventually face deportation as a result of his guilty plea.

The sentence was in line with what Zhang's probation officers had recommended. Prosecutors had sought a 12- to 18-month prison term.

Jerika Richardson, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in New York, declined to comment. New York Fed spokeswoman Andrea Priest also declined to comment.

The source code was for the Government-wide Accounting and Reporting Program, a system owned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and used to help manage billions of dollars of daily transfers.

Prosecutors said Zhang had been hired in May 2011 as a contractor for an unnamed technology consulting company that the Fed used to work on its computers.

They said he eventually copied part of the code onto a New York Fed-owned portable drive, and later transferred it to an office computer, a home computer and a personal laptop.

NO SECOND CHANCES

In seeking leniency, Zhang's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, pointed to his client's lack of a prior criminal history, his having been raised by nannies for part of his childhood and letters submitted to the court in support of a lighter sentence.

"Part of the problem here is his desperate, desperate attempts to fit in, to belong," he said.

Federal prosecutor Niketh Velamoor countered that while Zhang had had a difficult upbringing, he should be held responsible for his illegal activity.

The judge, though, called a prison sentence "not appropriate," while warning Zhang: "There will be no second chances."

Gardephe called the matter a "very unusual case for many reasons," including that the code "was developed at great cost, but which the government still has the complete ability and freedom to use."

All sides agreed that the actual loss linked to the theft was $5,000 or less.

It remains unclear how Zhang came to be hired or what kind of security clearance he had. Unlike federal agencies, the New York Fed does not have to reveal how it hires outside contractors.

The case is USA v Zhang, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-cr-00390.

This can be use for very effective internet marketing and internet based, targeted, or bulk e-mail (spam). If you decide to use an e-mail campaign to promote your site beware of being labeled a spammer and risking having you site shut down. Use the service of emails: Bulk e-mail is Where an advertiser buys or collects random e-mail addresses and sends out a letter or web page to all the addresses on the list.

Targeted e-mail is similar except that the e-mail addresses collected or Ongoing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) activity Managed PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns such as Google Adwords Email Marketing News Article Creation Blogging Video Creation Of course, being business focused and consultative in our approach, we think that the first step in carrying out Web Promotion activity is to first measure traffic and conversion so that we can better understand what the Return on Investment will be from your Web promotion are very imp spend. A similar form of advertising has come into recent use the web concept ? the dreaded pop-up. Pop-ups can take the form of pop-unders or pop-overs. The trickiest part of this form of advertising is that each time a pop-up shows up on the screen it is counted as a hit to the advertisers website. Therefore the companies selling this form of advertising tell their potential customers that they will be paying only for visits to their (the advertiser?s) site. What many of these companies fail to explain is that the viewer does not have to actually click on anything to have it count as a visit to the site for which the advertiser must pay. Therefore this is actually just a glorified form of banner advertising where the website owner is ?paying per view?. My guess is that pop-ups will go the way of banner advertising as more site owners calculate their actual return on investment To do this we can set up some simple but effective low cost tools such as Google Analytics which helps to provide us with the information and metrics we need to monitor the performance of our clients? websites.

NASA's Mars rover finds traces of carbon - one essential for life

SAN FRANCISCO | Mon Dec 3, 2012 4:43pm EST

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - - NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, dispatched to look for the chemical ingredients and environments for microbial life, has found traces of compounds containing carbon, an essential building block for life, scientists said on Monday.

"Just finding carbon somewhere doesn't mean that it has anything to do with life, or the finding of a habitable environment," lead scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology, told reporters at an American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco.

"If you have organic carbon and you don't have any water, you don't have a habitable environment," he said.

Even with carbon and water, life needs other chemicals, such as sulfur, oxygen, phosphorous and nitrogen, to form and evolve.

"It's not unexpected that this sand pile would not be rich in organics. It's been exposed to the harsh Martian environment," said planetary scientist Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

"It's really going to be an exciting hunt over the course of this mission to find early environments that might be protected from this surface Mars environment and see what we can add to the carbon story."

The rover, which touched down in August on the floor of a 93-mile wide impact crater near the Martian equator, has already turned up evidence that its landing site was once covered in water.

Scientists do not know if the carbon compounds in the soil are contamination from Earth - arrived on the surface of Mars via comets or asteroids - or if they are indigenous and came from geologic or biological activities on Mars.

"It tells us that we have a lead into a measurement of one of the important ingredients that adds to a habitable environment," Grotzinger said. "We still have a lot of work to do to qualify and characterize what it is."

The rover is expected to reach a richer slice of Martian history next year when it begins examining layers of sediment in a mountain rising from the floor of the crater.

"We're starting to find the spices that make a stew tasty. There are the basic ingredients that you expect to be there, but it's how you combine them and the minor ingredients that really turn out to be interesting," Grotzinger said.

"What this mission is about is integrated science. There is not going to be one single moment where we all stand up and, on the basis of a single measurement, have a hallelujah moment."

The $2 billion Curiosity mission, which is slated to last two years, is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s Viking probes.

How To Landscape Effectively on a Sloping Garden

It can be challenging for those with a home situated on a slope to know exactly how to design their garden, to make it look aesthetically pleasing while also preventing erosion. Although planting vegetation and maintaining a garden on a slope may be more difficult, there are a number of ways of effectively landscaping even the steepest of slopes. Read on for some easy hints and tricks on how to create a beautiful garden on an incline.

First off, you will want to plant a lawn of some kind on the incline. Almost all regular lawn varieties can grow well on slopes. For a more original look, you can also choose to use a variety of ornamental grasses - these long, colourful grasses can look particularly striking on a slope, as the grasses will all be at different heights creating an interesting textural effect.

If your garden is very steep and difficult to landscape, you could consider terracing the slope or adding a retaining wall. Terracing creates an attractive transition to another level, and also provides a fantastic flat area, perfect for planting flower beds. A great idea is to use plants that grow downwards and spill over the wall at the top of a terrace. Cascading greenery can help to obscure a retaining wall and looks fantastic. Remember that you need to have access to your plants in order to maintain your garden, and you should therefore add stairs or a gravel pathway to the slope so you can reach ever terraced level.

Another great idea when working with slopes is to create a rock garden. Rock gardens can be very attractive and of course require almost no maintenance. It is also one of the most affordable ways of landscaping on a slope.

Erosion is one of the biggest worries with a sloped garden, as rain water will naturally flow down the slope and can cause havoc to plants and soil. To help prevent erosion choose plants or trees with extensive, branching root systems, preferably whose roots grow deeply into the soil so that the soil is given structure and less likely to erode with time. The roots of adjacent plants will then be able to interlock at various levels in the soil and create a firm barrier against erosion. In addition, planting moisture loving vegetation will help to soak up excess water in the soil and make the slope more stable.

Groundcovers such as Blue Rug Juniper and Ivy are very easy to maintain, and are perfect for sloped areas. If you are looking for a more colourful option, you could choose a flowering ground cover such as Sweet Woodruff. Ground covers tend to spread easily over large areas meaning that you will have a lush, attractive garden with minimal effort. In addition, ground covers also tend to hold the soil better than individual plants, also reducing the risk of erosion.

Using these techniques you should be able to effectively and sensibly landscape a sloping garden to look stunning and not suffer any of the associated problems with these gardens.

Calls grow for probe into police violence at Myanmar mine

MONYWA, Myanmar (Reuters) - Buddhist monks marched in Myanmar's two biggest cities on Saturday to protest at police violence during a crackdown on demonstrators at a copper mine, while Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and a rights group called for an official inquiry.

Activists said at least 50 people had been injured on Thursday, including more than 20 monks who had ended up in hospital, after riot police raided camps set up round the Monywa copper mine by villagers protesting against their forced eviction to make way for an expansion of the project.

Police used tear gas, water cannon and, according to activists, incendiary devices that local media described as "phosphorous bombs". Many of the injured suffered serious burns.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at U.S.-based Human Rights Watch, called for a speedy, impartial investigation by the government.

"A hospital ward full of horribly burned Buddhist monks and other protesters deserve to know who attacked them while they were sleeping and what the government is going to do about it," he said.

"The crackdown ... is a fundamental test case for the government's commitment to peaceful assembly and willingness to demand accountability for abuses," he added.

Myanmar was ruled by a military junta for almost half a century until March 2011, but since then a quasi-civilian government under President Thein Sein has pushed through a series of political and economic reforms, leading Western states to ease sanctions.

Suu Kyi, who led the fight for democracy under the junta and is now a member of parliament, went to the Monywa area in the northwestern region of Sagaing to speak to locals on the day of the police raid. On Friday she also called for an inquiry.

"I think the people have the right to know why such violent measures were taken," she told a news conference. "I think it is needed to apologies to the monks."

She said she had called on the authorities to release any monks who had been detained, but had been told there were no arrests.

A police officer in Monywa, who declined to be named, said arrangements were being made for a formal apology but he declined to give further details.

Around 40 monks accompanied by about 60 other people staged a peaceful march around the Sule Pagoda in the commercial capital, Yangon, a focal point for monk-led protests in 2007 that were brutally put down by the junta.

They walked past the offices of the military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, a partner in the copper mine project with a unit of China North Industries Corp, a Chinese weapons manufacturer.

At the same time, at least 100 monks demonstrated in the second city, Mandalay.

Rallies have been held at the Monywa copper mine, Myanmar's biggest, for more than three months and have been seen as a test both of the new regime's willingness to allow peaceful protest and its attitude to land grabs.

Local residents say the $1 billion mine expansion entails the unlawful confiscation of more than 7,800 acres of land. They told Reuters in September that four of 26 villages at the project site had already been displaced, along with monasteries and schools.

State television said just before the crackdown that all project work had been halted since November 18 as a result of the protests.
