Andrei Arlovski?s camp says timing error in New Jersey caused him to take ?huge blow? late

Just days after Nick Diaz's camp criticized the athletic commission in Quebec for their handling of his UFC 158 weigh-in with UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, another athletic commission is under fire. Jackson's MMA, the gym who backs Andrei Arlovski, said a timing error by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board resulted in Arlovski's broken jaw.

Arlovski lost to Anthony Johnson in a World Series of Fighting bout on Saturday. Jackson's MMA posted on their Facebook about the timekeeping problem:

The NJ athletic commission was worried about the World Series of Fighting getting a new canvas and new corner pads for the cage they almost canceled the fight Saturday night. Unfortunately they forgot to get a time keeper that was trained properly. 1st round 5min 8 sec in the Andrei fight. A devastating blow was landed after the 5min mark. It's amazing how so much time is spent with over regulating but the simple things can cost dearly.

WSOF had to bring in a new canvas and pads when the ones they originally had were unsuitable. But the timing error is much worse. Check out this video via MMA Fighting, and listen to the wood clacking at the 10-second mark. The clock disappears from the screen at seven seconds. Even a generous countdown shows the fight went past the five-minute mark.

The worst part is that the damage Johnson caused came after the time should have expired. His jaw was broken, and it needed surgery for repair. It also raises questions on if the fight result would have been different if Arlovski wouldn't have been hurt late in the first round.

Obesity on the menu' for kids, group says | WTKR.com

(CNN) ? Fried chicken fingers, hamburgers, French fries and sugary sodas dominate children?s menus in most chain restaurants, and most kids? meals fall short of meeting basic nutritional standards, a nonprofit health advocacy group said Thursday.

Some 97% of nearly 3,500 kids? meals analyzed don?t meet basic nutritional standards, the Center for Science in the Public Interest said in its report ?Kids? Meals: Obesity on the Menu.?

What?s more, 91% don?t meet the National Restaurant Association?s own nutritional guidelines for its Kids LiveWell program, a voluntary program for restaurant owners, according to the report.

?Given that 1 out of 3 American children are overweight or obese, it?s pretty stunning that the top chain restaurants are still serving up the same old fried chicken nuggets, burgers, macaroni and cheese, fries and soda,? said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the CSPI and lead author of the report.

The worst offender: Applebee?s grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread with fries and 2% chocolate milk. The meal came in at a whopping 1,200 calories and 21 grams of saturated fat.

That?s followed by Chili?s pepperoni pizza meal with homestyle fries and a soda, which packs 1,120 calories, and Dairy Queen?s fried chicken strip meal with fries, a slushy drink and an ice cream bar, with 1,030 calories.

The CSPI nutritional standard was no more than 430 calories per meal, while the Kids LiveWell standard is 600 calories. Standards for both groups included no more than 770 milligrams of sodium per meal.

Nineteen restaurant chains offering kids meals, or 56%, fail to offer any meals meeting CSPI?s standards, the report says, and nine do not have one meal meeting the Kids LiveWell standards.

?It?s as if the restaurant industry hasn?t heard there is an obesity epidemic,? Wootan said.

In response to the report, Applebee?s and Chili?s pointed out that while one meal may have been singled out, they do offer healthy options for children.

?Although this report focuses on one sandwich from our children?s menu, the full Applebee?s children?s menu provides many options that are significantly lower in calories, fat and sodium? and meet the Kids LiveWell standards, said spokesman Kevin Mortesen. The chain?s grilled chicken sandwich meal for kids, with steamed broccoli and apple or grape juice, totals only 355 calories, he said.

?We know Applebee?s best serves our guests by providing a wide selection of dishes, and we?ll continue to do so by expanding the number of options for kids by the end of this year.?

Chili?s says it offers a number of lower-calorie, lower-sodium and low-fat options on both its adult and Pepper Pals child menus, and that guests may customize and modify their orders ? substituting side items, for instance.

?We do our part on our Pepper Pals menu to meet these requirements (for a well-balanced meal) by offering choices, including grilled chicken, salad with low-fat ranch dressing, fresh pineapples, steamed broccoli and celery sticks,? the company said in a statement.

Chili?s was an ?inaugural partner? of the National Restaurant Association?s Kids LiveWell program, according to the statement, and ?continues to support this organization which empowers parents to make informed decisions about their children?s meals as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.?

The National Restaurant Association, meanwhile, touted the program. Joy Dubost, the association?s director of nutrition and healthy living, called Kids LiveWell ?a first-of-its-kind, voluntary initiative that helps parents and children select healthful menu options when dining out at nearly 40,000 locations nationwide.

?The program, now with more than 120 restaurant brands, has achieved significant momentum in just 18 short months ? participating restaurants offer and promote healthful meals for children,? Dubost said.

Dairy Queen did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment on the report.

The CSPI describes itself as a Washington-based nonprofit health advocacy group focusing on nutrition and food safety. Of the kids? meals it analyzed, 86% contained more than 430 calories, and 50% have more than 600 calories, the report says. About two-thirds ? 66% ? exceeded the sodium standard.

The federal government?s Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that children ages 4 to 10 consume between 400 and 670 calories at each meal, depending on their age, gender and physical activity levels.

While some chains offer non-soda and fruit options, ?soft drinks and fried potatoes are still more common options on children?s menus,?? according to the report. The CSPI recommendations include offering more fruit and vegetable options and making those the default side dishes with every children?s meal.

However, the news isn?t all bad, according to the report. All eight of Subway?s Fresh Fit for Kids meal combinations met CSPI?s nutrition criteria.

The chain also was lauded for not offering sugary drinks as an option with kids? meals, instead including low-fat milk or bottled water and apple slices with its child-sized subs. However the group recommended that Subway increase the whole-grain content of its breads and continue to lower sodium.

The best Subway option: a kids? roast beef sub, apple slices and 1% milk, which comes in at 395 calories.

Other healthy choices: Burger King?s oatmeal, IHOP?s whole wheat blueberry pancakes, Outback Steakhouse?s kids sirloin with apples and grapes, and Olive Garden?s cheese ravioli with broccoli and orange juice.

?Four years ago we found that only 1% of kids? meals at the top chain restaurants were healthy, and now 3% are healthy,? Wootan said. ?So there is a tiny bit of improvement, but it?s very, very small.?

Sodium rates also have shown improvement, she said. In 2008, only 15% of restaurant meals met the sodium standard; now 35% do.

The bottom line, she said: There?s a lot of work to do.

?In order for parents to feed their children healthfully, restaurants need to help,? Wootan said. The group encourages participation in the Kids LiveWell program, and says restaurants should offer more whole grains and get rid of soda and other sugary drinks.

?We know they can do it, because some are already doing it,? she said.

Time to travel: Long way home

Written 6th March 2023

Soundtrack: Alt-j -Matilda

The date has arrived: March 6th. It's crazy how much your life can change in a day, to go from baking in the hot Melbourne sun, to arriving in white skyed London... 4?. Going home is so much more than just getting on a plane and seeing family again, it's the smell of England that once went unnoticed, the blue road signs, the familiar accents, the quaint pubs ( we do pubs best), the cups of tea and toast with lurpack, and adjusting to life without your trusty backpack. I'm excited about the simplest of things, like cardigan shopping, cuddling up with my cat, hugging mum, and being greeted by the neighbours. As you may tell I'm feeling quite nostalgic at the moment, with 14 hours thinking time before my next flight, to dwell on the amazing 5 months I just had, and how I may never be back to this country. But leaving somewhere is always difficult, and makes you think about your life and how, really, you can take it and live it anywhere in the world you wish.?

Brands Name Their Top Mobile Myths | Digiday

There is no Santa Claus. The tooth fairy isn?t real. And this is not the year of mobile.

Mobile marketing, like a lot of other digital tactics, is full of myths and misconceptions. Digiday spoke to brand executives to get a sense of what these myths and misconceptions are. The gist: Mobile is a mindset, not a technology, and consumers are using their phones for more than just social networking and playing games.

George Felix, brand manager for eBusiness, Procter & Gamble
The biggest misconception is that mobile marketing means creating an app, delivering a mobile banner ad or simply making things visible on a small screen. In reality, mobile marketing starts with understanding what your consumers are doing differently on their mobile device and then designing your brand website, social channels and marketing plans to address those insights. Since the mobile phone is the most intimate device a person owns, it is imperative that we be smart about how, when and where we choose to engage with consumers in this space. Without adding value to consumers through the mobile experience, we will most likely annoy them by intruding in a space that they feel is personal.

Edward J. Kaczmarek, director of innovation and emerging technology, Mondelez International
One is that mobile marketing is not as effective as other digital marketing. When done great, mobile marketing is one of the best ways to engage consumers closest to the point of purchase. Consumer behavior has changed dramatically over the past few years, and you don?t have to look further than the checkout line to see it play out. When consumers used to look up at product displays before checkout, now they?re much more likely to be absorbed in their phone, and that?s a major challenge for major categories of our business, from gum to candy to chocolate. So mobile marketing enables us to better connect with the mobile shopper to win in-store and in-aisle. It is also an amazing marketing vehicle to present interactive information in a relevant manner ? when the consumer needs it most and it?s most impactful ? whether that is using contextual or location.

Barbara Williams-Pamplin, mobile marketing global practice lead, Microsoft
The biggest misconception about mobile marketing is that due to the computing power of the current generation of smartphones and the tablet?s screen size, mobile-first experiences are not a priority. The misconception is based on the idea that viewing the ?normal? Web is technically feasible on these devices, so there is no need to create experiences especially for these devices. However, that approach fails to take into consideration several facts. First, consumers don?t use all devices in the same way or for the same purpose, so content and input methodology needs are different. Also, consumers will move on to look for another source of info (competitor if necessary) if they are unable to find what they are looking for on the mobile site visited. And, lastly, a poor non-mobile optimized experience can and will negatively impact the consumer?s perception of the brand.

Steve Morse, search and mobile marketing manager, Omaha Steaks
One is that text-message marketing is the silver bullet. While SMS is a great way to reach people on the go, it?s not one-size-fits-all, and it certainly doesn?t work for every marketer. There is considerable effort in building the list to scale, and much thought has to be put into the messaging to achieve the desired action.?It works better for smaller, local business than it does for the big brands.?It can be powerful when used strategically, but it?s certainly not the silver bullet for mobile marketers.

Jim Cuene, director of interactive marketing, General Mills
The biggest misconception about mobile marketing is that it?s about phones and phone technology. It?s about a mindset, a user context and need states. The phone is just a tool.

Aubrey Flynn, brand content director, Ciroc Premium Vodka
The biggest myth about mobile marketing is that it?s only for a younger audience. Over 50 percent of mobile users are over 35. With expectations that the mobile Web will hit 2 billion users by 2015, outpacing desktop Internet usage, marketers will be forced to treat mobile as a top priority. Another misconception is that consumers are only using mobile for social networking and games. Nearly one third of consumers say they prefer shopping on mobile devices. Hence, we?re expecting more innovations through mobile commerce in coming years as well.

Stephanie Kovner-Bryant, former senior manager of digital marketing, Unilever
The biggest myth is around consumer ?trust.? I don?t think consumers are ready to dive into mobile with their financial information. There are still concerns around security. Consumers do want to use their phones to accomplish simple tasks (utilize coupons, scan products, use as a boarding pass, etc.), but I think there is some real hesitancy when it comes to keeping their financial information on their phone and then using it in retail environments (i.e., the wallet).

Brian Maynard, Jenn-Air director of marketing, Whirlpool
Whenever new channels become available, particularly in the digital space, it is suddenly believed that this new channel is the most important. Mobile is yet another tool in the marketer?s tool box and should be used when it can support your strategy. I?ll add here that mobile discounts/coupons can be important for certain categories but not all, like some say. I find it hard to believe that if I provide a coupon because you are near one of my sales outlets that that would suddenly cause you to purchase a $7,500 range. Luxury appliances are a very considered purchases, so we spend our efforts educating consumers.

Tim McCarver to step down from Fox after season

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim McCarver will make his 55th straight season of Major League Baseball his last.

The two-time champion catcher will call the World Series this year and then retire from his analyst job at Fox.

"I wanted to step down while I know I can still do the job and proud of the job I've done," the 71-year-old McCarver said during a conference call Wednesday.

His health is good, McCarver said. So are his passion and energy for the game.

It was just time.

"It's not a tough call," he said. "It's not a sad thing for me."

McCarver had been thinking about moving on for a couple of years. This winter, Fox executives visited him at his home in Florida to discuss extending his contract, which expired after the 2013 season.

They never even started negotiations. McCarver had already made up his mind.

He has worked 28 consecutive MLB postseasons on network television dating to 1984, providing analysis for a record 23 World Series.

McCarver got his start in broadcasting in 1980 with the Philadelphia Phillies and NBC's "Game of the Week." He has also called local games for the New York Mets and Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.

McCarver later worked for ABC and CBS before joining Fox in 1996. Last year, he was honored by baseball's Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball broadcasting.

"You've always been a great symbol of class," Commissioner Bud Selig told McCarver on the conference call.

McCarver spent 21 seasons in the majors between 1959 and 1980, mostly with the Cardinals and Phillies. He was a two-time All-Star and won the World Series in 1964 and 1967 with St. Louis.

He missed the start of the 2011 AL championship series because of a minor heart-related procedure, but the test result that necessitated that medical work turned out to be a false positive.

McCarver has seen other people in various businesses stay at their jobs until their health eventually forced them out, and their quality of life was often not very good after they retired. McCarver didn't want that for himself.

A wine aficionado with a second home in California's Napa Valley, he'd love to travel to Italy for cooking classes.

"I plan on living a very long life, believe me," McCarver said. "I hope Mother Nature cooperates."

McCarver could still appear on Fox or its new cable network, Fox Sports 1, in a different role in the future. But until he tests out retirement, he can't predict whether he'll still want to do a little broadcasting.

McCarver worked with announcer Jack Buck on CBS from 1990-91 then became broadcast partners with his son, Joe Buck, at Fox in 1996.

Joe Buck said he had learned more about broadcasting from McCarver than anyone else, "even my father."

A reward credit card for those who carry a balance

Bank of America just rolled out a new type of reward credit card for people who carry a balance. The BankAmericard Better Balance Rewards card gives customers $25 cash back each quarter if they pay more than the minimum required each month and make that payment on time.

?There was definitely a need for this that was not being met,? said Titi Cole, Bank of America?s senior executive for retail products. ?It rewards customers for what they?re trying to do, which is pay off their balances and manage their debt responsibly, and hopefully deepens their relationship with us.?

The card has no annual fee and the interest rate is zero percent for the first 12 months on new purchases and balance transfers made during the first 60 days.

Those who have another relationship with the bank, such as a checking or savings account, will get an extra $5 bonus each quarter they qualify for cash back.

?I actually like this card and I don?t say that about a lot of credit cards,? said John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education at SmartCredit.com. ?Anytime a bank is willing to give me free money, I?ll gladly take it. And that $25 a quarter really starts to add up over time.?

Other consumer advocates who?ve looked at the card agree: It rewards people for doing the right thing.

?Giving people an incentive to reduce their debit rather than an incentive to increase spending is definitely an improvement,? said Tom Feltner, director of financial services at the Consumer Federation of America.

To get the $25 cash each quarter, cardholders must make more than the minimum payment each month. And that?s the key to paying down credit card debt for those who can?t pay the balance in full.

?Only making the minimum payment is a treadmill to nowhere,? said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com. ?It pays down the balance at a snail?s pace and even on a modest balance; the interest charges can multiply over time and be several times larger than the original balance you carried.?

Bank of America plans to market the Better Balance Rewards card to its current customers through information at the branches and targeted marketing.

?They may already have a card with us and this could be their second card,? Cole told me. ?Or they may be carrying a balance with a competitor and now we can offer them a more compelling value proposition than what they have.?

As with any credit card offer, the devil is in the details.

?No interest for the first year is a great deal for people who carry a balance, but after that your interest rate is pegged to your creditworthiness,? noted Gerri Detweiler, personal finance expert at Credit.com. ?Then it could go as high as 21.99 percent.?

Also, there?s still a penalty for making a late payment: a fee of up to $35 and that zero percent interest period will disappear. The new rate could be as high as 29.99 percent.

Is this card for you?
If you carry a credit card balance that you can?t pay off, this might be the way to go, especially if you have the discipline to pay more than the minimum and make those payments on time each month. You?ll get 12 months to tackle the balance with no finance charges.

The key is to keep the new spending in check ? even with a zero percent interest rate ? or you could be worse off than you started.

?That is always the risk with a no-interest grace period,? said Gail Cunningham with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. In theory, it?s a great tool. In practice, it can trip you up if you?re not financially disciplined.?

Before you apply for this or any other card, consider your options.

?If you?re really after zero percent interest on either a balance transfer or on introductory purchases, there are cards that offer that well beyond the 12-month mark,? McBride told me. ?So it?s important to shop around and find the card that?s best suited for you need.?

Should this killer be released from prison?

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Iowa's governor has called a rare public hearing Wednesday to gather input on whether he should free an inmate widely credited with turning his life around while serving 38 years in prison for a 1974 murder.

Rasberry Williams, 66, is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder after shooting a neighbor over a $30 gambling debt outside a Waterloo pool hall. His decade-long bid to have his sentence commuted to a set number of years so he can become eligible for parole has won the backing of the Iowa Board of Parole, prison wardens, the prosecutor who convicted him and the judge who oversaw his trial.

But the only opinion that matters is that of Gov. Terry Branstad, who called the hearing in Waterloo to allow the public to sound off on the parole board's 4-0 recommendation that Williams' sentence be adjusted. Branstad is the third Iowa governor to consider Williams' request and has until May 4 to accept or reject the board's recommendation. During 18 years in office spread over three decades, Branstad has commuted the life terms of only two inmates, the last being in 1992.

Williams' supporters, however, argue the governor should show leniency to reward a remarkable rehabilitation. Prison officials describe Williams as a model inmate who got an education in prison, mentored scores of young offenders and served as a fixture in programs where he warned young people to avoid trouble. And, in what officials call his most noteworthy act, he once intervened to save the lives of prison guards who had been taken hostage by another inmate.

"It's an extraordinary case, and that's what makes it so compelling," said Waterloo attorney David Dutton, who prosecuted Williams but recently came out in support of commutation. "He's served 38 years and during that time, he's saved two guards and has comported himself as a model citizen, albeit under very difficult conditions. That, in my view, indicates a person who has truly understood the importance of acting on behalf of others. I think that's a sign of a changed person, and a person that is not going to be a threat to society."

Branstad requested Wednesday's hearing because he wanted to hear from people who live in the community where the shooting happened, said the governor's spokesman, Tim Albrecht. He said Branstad will consider the impact on victims, public safety and Williams' behavior while incarcerated, in deciding Williams' future.

Jeremy Haile, who tracks criminal justice issues at the Sentencing Project, which advocates shorter sentences, said it's rare for a governor to free someone convicted of murder because of the political risks involved. The hearing is a smart move, he said, because strong support for Williams would help justify a decision to release him.

"Ultimately, executives have to act not because they will benefit politically, but because extending mercy is the right thing to do," Haile said.

Only a dozen Iowa inmates serving life sentences have had them commuted since 1986, state data shows. Nationally, Haile said the number of life sentences had risen dramatically in recent decades in a tough-on-crime political climate and executives at the state and federal level have been increasingly reluctant to show mercy.

Williams was convicted in the death of his next-door neighbor, 40-year-old Lester Givhan. The two began arguing over a $30 debt at a pool hall, and when Givhan refused to pay, Williams waited outside, confronted Givhan and shot him once. Williams turned himself into police hours later.

Givhan had a gun in his pocket, and the then-28-year-old Williams claimed he acted in self-defense. "I had to stand my ground," he told the parole board in January. He said he worried Givhan would've killed him, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press through the public records law.

But jurors didn't buy that, and even Williams' defense lawyer, Wallace Parrish, said he was guilty.

"When you have facts like that, it was like getting hit on the head with a hammer," Parrish said. "You had him lying in wait, you had intent. There was no defending that. It was like he read a book on the elements of first-degree murder, and went out and committed each element deliberately."

The attorney also said, however, that Williams had served enough time for "a crime of passion" and would not pose a safety risk if allowed to live with his sister in Chicago. Parrish called the former prosecutor's support for Williams' commutation "very significant."

Dutton opposed the parole board's 2005 recommendation to commute Williams' sentence. But he said he didn't know then that Williams had helped save the lives of two guards who were held hostage in 1979 by an inmate at the penitentiary in Fort Madison.

In a letter supporting Williams' commutation, inmate George Goff said he planned to ignite gasoline in a cell where he was holding guards at knifepoint, but Williams approached and told him, "'boy don't you do that! It is not worth getting a life sentence for.'"

Goff freed the hostages unharmed.

"If it not been for Rasberry Williams that day there would have been two dead guards and I would be doing a life sentence," Goff wrote.

Gov. Tom Vilsack denied Williams' commutation bid in 2006, citing concerns he had been gambling in prison, which Williams denied. His successor, Gov. Chet Culver, reviewed Williams' commutation file during his final days in office in 2011 but didn't act.

Among those hoping Branstad will give Williams another chance is Walter Polk, 65, who worked with Williams at the WonderBread bakery in Waterloo even after his arrest.

"He was so trustworthy and the company liked his work, that he worked up until his conviction," Polk said. "Rasberry was a happy-go-lucky person, a person to keep you laughing. . . . I knew he had this incident in his life, but I think he just got caught up in in the moment."

Viewers to choose ending of 'Psych' 100th episode

(AP Photo/USA Network, Alan Zenuk)

(AP) ? From a bank of chairs in an NBC Universal control room, technician Antonella Caruso counted down as if she were anticipating a rocket booster's liftoff: "Nine, eight, seven, six ..."

It was a dress rehearsal for USA's plan to let viewers of "Psych" choose the ending of Wednesday's episode, celebrating the drama's 100th episode and culminating the network's two-year experiment at an exclusively fan-centered approach at marketing.

In the episode, Shawn (actor James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill) try to solve a murder at a party hosted by an old rock star in a California mansion. There are five suspects: the groupie, the manager, the author, the host and, of course, the butler. During the show, the suspects are narrowed down to three and viewers are asked to vote on social media who they thought committed the crime. Three endings were filmed, each lasting three minutes, and the top vote-getter will be used.

The episode salutes the 1985 film "Clue" and features that film's actors Christopher Lloyd, Lesley Ann Warren and Martin Mull, along with guest shots from Garrett Morris and Curt Smith of Tears For Fears.

Depending on where you live, you could see a different ending. USA is conducting separate votes for the East and West coast airings of the show. (Viewers in other time zones will see the Eastern version at 10 p.m. Eastern.) They estimate tabulating 190,000 to 250,000 votes.

Viewer-selected endings aren't necessarily unique (CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" did one this year), but here fans will be updated a handful of times during the show on how the vote is going. That's where Caruso's practice came in; she was counting down to an insert of a vote tally.

"Psych" is in its seventh season, a point at which most shows are considered "mature" and are losing viewers, but it does have a relatively young, devoted audience and is USA's third most-popular original show behind "Burn Notice" and "Suits." Instead of running general advertisements encouraging viewership when its sixth season started last year, USA sought to engage fans through social media and activities, said Alexandra Shapiro, USA's executive vice president of marketing and digital.

"It's great to be loved," Shapiro said. "But you have to love back."

USA set up online games for "Psych" fans to play, with real and virtual prizes. Particularly high-scoring fans even become part of the game. There was a fan appreciation day, with some invited to meet the cast. USA encouraged social media interaction with stars and others involved with the show. A "slumber party" of viewer-chosen shows that aired from midnight to 6 a.m. on a Saturday in February resulted in some 157,000 mentions on Twitter.

One goal is to make live viewing of new episodes an event, Shapiro said. DVR viewing is fine, but networks still reliably make more money when there is a strong audience for original airings.

So far, so good. The February debut of the seventh season saw stronger ratings than the sixth season opener in 2012, with a 22 percent increase in the desirable young audience of viewers aged 18-to-34, the Nielsen company said.

"Our job is so much harder than it was 10 years ago or even five years ago," Shapiro said. "We used to be content messengers. Now you have to be content creators. You as a marketer have to create compelling content that a fan is going to engage with."

It's not necessarily an approach that works with every show, she said. But it could be a template for some with similar audiences.

For this week, the chief concern is compiling the fans' votes, and making sure technicians in New Jersey charged with making sure the correct ending of Wednesday's episode is inserted.

In Cyprus deal, Russia may have the last laugh

Europe won this round. But Russia may have the last laugh.

As part of a $13 billion deal to a bail out a pair of bloated Cyprus banks, European officials Monday won the Nicosia government?s backing for a painful ?haircut? on bank accounts that will inflict maximum financial pain on Russian companies and wealthy depositors who have long used the tiny island nation as a tax shelter.

The last-minute deal, reached just hours before a European ultimatum to cut off the country?s financial lifelines, is aimed at reining in a Cypriot banking system that had gorged on tax-dodging oligarchs and failed Greek bonds.

The agreement ends a week of street protests in Cyprus, long lines at withdrawal-limited cash machines, and a tense geopolitical standoff after European officials made the unprecedented demand that ordinary Cypriot savers share in the cost of any bank bailout.

Under the final terms, accounts of under $130,000 will be spared. But the concession will shift the financial pain even more heavily to large accounts, many of which hold roughly $30 billion in assets belonging to Russian companies and wealthy individuals. Under the revised terms, large account holders now stand to lose as much of 40 percent of their money ? four times the original proposal.

Russian leaders ? who last week rejected pleas from Cypriot officials for an alternative financial lifeline ? were understandable unhappy with the final deal.

"The stealing of what has already been stolen continues," Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev reportedly told a private meeting of government officials.

In their public response, Russian officials have been more measured. The government signaled Monday it would help backstop the European bailout by refinancing a 2011 loan with a lower interest rate or by extending repayment deadlines.

Despite widespread anger over a plan widely denounced in Moscow as ?bank robbery,? the Russians have reason to soften their public stance.

For one thing, Moscow and Nicosia still enjoy deep economic and political ties that go well beyond the latest tug-of-war with Europe. Cyprus represents an important strategic location in the Mediterranean, even more so as the future of Russian ally Syria grows more uncertain.

Russian energy companies are also eyeing large, recently discovered deposits of natural gas in Cyprus.

"It's a mistake to think that it's a very special class of rich people [that have their money in Cyprus]," said Cyprus' finance minister, Michael Sarris, early Monday. "Russians have their lawyers, accountants or their families and friends in Cyprus, so our relationship can withstand a shock like this."

While the European bank bailout will be painful for individual haircut victims, the overall losses are relatively small ? less than 1 percent of total deposits in the Russian banking system.

By stepping back from the turmoil, Russia can now watch European leaders struggle with what promises to become an even bigger money pit. Having helped break the banking system in Cyprus, Europe now owns it.

It?s not clear how much more cash will be needed to finish the job. As part of the bailout, Cyprus? second largest bank, Laiki , was sold for parts to the Bank of Cyprus, the country?s largest. Laiki?s toxic assets will be sold off over time ? assuming any one wants them.

The financial hole in Cypriot banks may yet deepen further as skittish depositors head for the exits once they eventually are allowed to get their hands on their money. Confiscating large chunk of existing accounts will make new depositors think twice about handing their money over to a Cypriot bank.

On Monday, there was still no official timetable for ending an ongoing bank ?holiday.? Bailout terms also include yet-unspecified restrictions on future withdrawals.

By standing on the sidelines, Russia has also left European leaders with an even bigger mess to clean up. Though the Brussels bailout may succeed in shrinking bloated Cypriot financial system, it will trash the Cypriot economy, which relies heavily on its banking sector for jobs and tax revenues.

After busting Cyprus' banks, European officials acknowledged that the tiny nation - with an economy smaller than Vermont's - now faces a painful recession that will require an even bigger Brussels bailout in fairly short order.

?The near future will be very difficult for the country and its people and the (European) Commission will do everything possible to alleviate the social consequences of this economic shock,? Europe's Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Olli Rehn, told reporters after the deal was announced.

European leaders face even bigger headaches beyond tiny Sypruis. Their new ?bail-in? strategy - forcing bank depositors to pay for a bail-out - hasn?t gone unnoticed in much larger countries, like Italy and Spain, with much larger banks and economies. Despite those two countries? limited trade and finance links to Cyprus, the wider bailout backlash could create a much bigger mess for Europe

The worry is that depositors in those banking systems ? which are far too large for Europe to backstop ? could stage a slow-motion bank run to move their cash out of the reach of Brussels bureaucrats. Bank stocks in Italy and Spain were down sharply Monday.

Beyond the financial impact, the political backlash to the Cypriot bailout may be even more damaging to the long-run prospects of a unified Europe.

For the past two years, resentment has been growing in struggling southern countries like Greece, Spain, Italy ? and now Cyrus ? over harsh economic demands from their wealthy northern neighbors ? lead by Germany.

Recent elections have only widened that political divide. In Italy, for example, voters recently rejected Brussels-friendly candidates in favor of an anti-euro, comic-turned-politician, Beppe Grillo, and former prime minister, Silvo Berlusconi, a colorful media tycoon convicted of tax evasion.

The result is that Italy has yet to form a new government with the legal authority to negotiate with European leaders.

?We?re talking about the third biggest euro zone economy - basically a political system currently frozen because of this huge populist movement,? said Jim O?Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. ?They seem to be saying, ?We have had enough.?? That is not an easy thing to solve at all.?

Girl, 9, walks to get help after crash kills dad

(AP) ? A 9-year-old girl crawled out of a mangled SUV, climbed out of a canyon and walked about a mile in the middle of the night to find help after surviving a highway crash that killed her father in Southern California, authorities said.

The 2010 Ford Escape was launched about 200 feet down an embankment along a semi-rural stretch of the Sierra Highway in Acton about 1 a.m. Sunday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Cheyenne Quesada. The vehicle overturned several times.

The girl managed to extricate herself and walk through rugged terrain to a nearby home, but nobody answered the door, the CHP said. Then she hiked up the steep embankment and along the road to a commuter rail station where she flagged down a passing motorist at about 2:30 a.m.

"She walked quite a distance in a very, very threatening environment. It's very black out there, very dark," CHP Sgt. Tom Lackey told KABC-TV. "It's very steep and it's brushy and there's also coyotes in the background."

Responding officers found a man in his 30s had been killed, Quesada said. His name was not released but officials said he was from Los Angeles.

A helicopter transported the girl to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. She was treated for minor injuries including bumps and bruises and a cut on her face.

Television footage showed crews removing the severely damaged black SUV from the canyon.

The CHP is investigating whether alcohol played a role in the crash.

Temple's Wyatt says thumb OK, ready for Indiana

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? Temple star guard Khalif Wyatt says his injured left thumb should not be a problem when the Owls play top-seeded Indiana in the NCAA tournament.

The Atlantic 10's player of the year got hurt in the second half of Friday's win over North Carolina State. He came out briefly to get his thumb taped and scored 31 points as the Owls advanced to face the Hoosiers. Wyatt said Saturday that X-rays were negative.

Owls coach Fran Dunphy expects Wyatt to be a "little tender" against Indiana on Sunday. Wyatt was checked by the team's doctor again Saturday, and Dunphy says the senior didn't have any trouble with his thumb during practice. Dunphy says the biggest concern is Wyatt's ability to catch the ball, but he doesn't think the injury "is a huge concern."

EBay to change fees to lure Amazon sellers

SAN FRANCISCO - EBay said Tuesday it will overhaul fees for sellers on its online marketplace, stepping up competition with Amazon.com.

EBay is scrapping its complex, tiered set of "final value fees," calculated as a percentage of an item's sale price, and introducing flat-rate fees based on product categories.

Many of eBay's listing fees, contentious among sellers, are also going away. Most of the changes kick in April 16, with others taking effect May 1.

Many sellers will pay lower fees after the changes, especially those who are not volume sellers and list less than 12,250 times per month, according to Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell on online marketplaces including eBay and Amazon.

"These fee changes definitely make eBay more competitive," said Wingo.

EBay's move comes as sellers on Amazon's marketplace become increasingly upset with fee increases.

The company's announcement about the new fees included a table comparing its charges to Amazon's fees, a move that Wingo said he had not seen before.

"EBay is really coming out swinging against Amazon," Wingo added.

For consumers who sell only a few items a year, eBay will offer 50 free listings per month. If the item sells, the company will take 10 percent of the sale price.

EBay has been using a fee structure that included a listing fee of 50 cents per item for full-price listings. The company has been offering free listings only on auctioned items.

For larger-volume sellers, eBay will introduce new final value fees ranging from 4 percent to 9 percent, depending on the product category. Fees have varied, depending on the sale price of the items.

"For most of our sellers the complexity of our fees were keeping them from being on eBay and preventing them from having full transparency into their profitability from selling on eBay," said Michael Jones, vice president of merchant development.

"There will be some sellers who will pay a little bit more on eBay, but most sellers will be impacted positively by this," he added.

EBay shares rose 1.5 percent to $50.85 on the Nasdaq. Amazon was off nearly 1 percent to $255.75.

Kerry calls Turkish PM's Zionism comments 'objectionable'

Kayhan Ozer / Pool via EPA

Secretary of State John Kerry talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Turkey, March 1, 2013.

By Arshad Mohammed and Jonathon Burch, Reuters

Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday criticized a comment by Turkey's prime minister likening Zionism to crimes against humanity, as the disagreement cast a shadow over talks between the NATO allies.

Kerry, on his first trip to a Muslim nation since taking office, met Turkish leaders for talks meant to focus on the civil war in neighboring Syria and bilateral interests from energy security and Iran's nuclear program to counter-terrorism.

But the comment by Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan at a U.N. meeting in Vienna this week, condemned by his Israeli counterpart, the White House and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has clouded his visit.

"We not only disagree with it, we found it objectionable," Kerry told a news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, saying he raised the issue "very directly" with Davutoglu and would do so with Erdogan.

Erdogan told the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations meeting in Vienna on Wednesday: "Just as with Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, it has become necessary to view Islamophobia as a crime against humanity."

The Turkish prime minister's caustic rhetoric on Israel has in the past won applause from conservative supporters at home but raised increasing concern among Western allies.

Kerry said Turkey and Israel were both key U.S. allies and urged them to restore closer ties.

?

"Given the many challenges that the neighborhood faces, it is essential that both Turkey and Israel find a way to take steps ... to rekindle their historic cooperation," Kerry said.

"I think that's possible but obviously we have to get beyond the kind of rhetoric that we've just seen recently."

While on a visit to Turkey, Secretary of State John Kerry spoke out about the violence in Syria. He has pledged to send Syria $60 million in non-lethal aid and Syrian opposition leaders are asking for secure humanitarian quarters through which aid can enter the country. NBC's Catherine Chomiak reports.

Washington needs all the allies it can get as it navigates the political currents of the Middle East, and sees Turkey as a key player in supporting Syria's opposition and planning for the era after President Bashar Assad.

Ties between Israel and Turkey have been frosty since 2010, when Israeli marines killed nine Turks in fighting aboard a Palestinian aid ship that tried to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

"If we must talk about hostile acts, then Israel's attitude and its brutal killing of nine of our civilian citizens in international waters may be called hostile," Davutoglu said, adding Turkey had always stood against anti-Semitism.

"No single statement carries a price higher than the blood of a person ... If Israel wants to hear positive statements from Turkey it needs to reconsider its attitude both towards us and towards the West Bank," he told the news conference.

Turkey has demanded a formal apology for the 2010 incident, compensation for victims and their families and for the Gaza blockade to be lifted. Israel has voiced "regret" and has offered to pay into what it called a "humanitarian fund" through which casualties and relatives could be compensated.

Support for Syrian opposition
Erdogan appeared displeased when Kerry arrived late for their evening talks, remarking there was not much time left, according to a U.S. pool reporter who attended the picture-taking session at the start of the meeting.

Kerry, in turn, apologized, saying that he had a good meeting with Davutoglu, according to the pool reporter.

Erdogan, speaking through an interpreter, replied that they "must have spoken about everything so there is nothing left for us to talk about." In a joking tone of voice, Kerry said: "We need you to sign off on everything."

Turkey's relations with the United States have always been prickly. And Erdogan's populist rhetoric, sometimes at apparent odds with U.S. interests, is aimed partly at a domestic audience wary of Washington's influence.

But the two have strong common interests. Officials said Syria would top the agenda in Kerry's meetings with Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, building on the discussions in Rome between 11 mostly European and Arab nations within the "Friends of Syria" group.

After the Rome meeting, Kerry said on Thursday the United States would for the first time give non-lethal aid to the rebels and more than double support to the civilian opposition, although Western powers stopped short of pledging arms.

Turkey has been one of Assad's fiercest critics, hosting a NATO Patriot missile defense system, including two U.S. batteries, to protect against a spillover of violence and leading calls for international intervention.

It has spent more than $600 million sheltering refugees from the conflict that began almost two years ago, housing some 180,000 in camps near the border and tens of thousands more who are staying with relatives or in private accommodation.

Washington has given $385 million in humanitarian aid for Syria but U.S. President Barack Obama has so far refused to give arms, arguing it is difficult to prevent them from falling into the hands of militants who could use them on Western targets.

Turkey, too, has been reluctant to provide weapons, fearing direct intervention could bring the conflict across its borders.
