(AP) ? As President Barack Obama surveys damage from raging wildfires and thanks first responders in Colorado, he also will be seeking to show voters in one of the nation's most tightly contested political swing states that he is a compassionate leader who can command in a crisis.

Though Obama will spend just three hours Friday on the ground in Colorado, his cross-country dash underscores the enormous power of incumbency in an election year. The president has resources at his disposal that Republican challenger Mitt Romney simply can't compete with, from the ability to fly Air Force One anywhere in the country on short notice to the authority to dole out federal funds to help disaster-stricken states recover.

He declared "a major disaster" exists in the state early Friday and promised federal aid.

Obama will arrive midday in Colorado Springs, where officials say more than 30,000 people have been evacuated in what is now the most destructive wildfire in state history. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the blaze that has encroached on the state's second-largest city and threatened the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The White House says Obama is making the trip because he wants to get a firsthand look at the wildfire damage in order to see whether additional federal resources are necessary.

But election year political concerns also create an imperative for Obama to be on the ground.

Just over four months from Election Day, the contest in Colorado is very close, and Obama and Romney are each looking to swing the state in their favor anyway they can.

About 46 percent of registered voters backed Obama, 42 percent backed Romney and 8 percent were undecided in an NBC News/Marist poll conducted in late May.

Both sides are devoting significant money and manpower to the state, which tends to swing from one political party to the other in presidential elections. Obama easily carried Colorado in 2008. So did his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, in 2004.

Obama also has walked tornado-stricken streets in Missouri and Alabama, and met with flood victims in Tennessee, all states that voted against him in the 2008 presidential election.

Every decision the Obama White House makes to send the president to a disaster zone is done under the shadow of Bush's botched response to Hurricane Katrina, which irrevocably damaged his presidency.

Bush was widely criticized as detached and uncaring when he viewed the hurricane damage from the air rather than meeting with people on the ground. White House officials said at the time that they didn't want Bush's presence to distract from the recovery efforts.

Obama has faced some criticism that his trip to Colorado could divert time and resources away from the efforts to fight the fires.

"While President Obama certainly has the right to come to Colorado whenever he chooses, I believe his visit tomorrow will be a distraction from what has to be our only priority, which is containing and then defeating these fires," Bill Owens, the former Republican governor of Colorado, said.

But Colorado's current Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper said Colorado officials from both parties support the president's visit.

"They said, 'You're right, this is not a political thing. This is what the president of the United States should be doing in a situation like this,'" Hickenlooper said.

Yet Colorado, with huge swaths of independent-minded voters, does hold significant political weight in November. In a tight election, the state's nine electoral votes could make the difference between a win or a loss.

The Obama campaign and a political action committee supporting him have spent more than $8 million in television advertisements in the state, according to Republican officials who track ad buys. Romney and outside groups backing his candidacy have spent over $4 million.

The NBC/Marist poll found that Obama has advantages with Colorado voters on social issues and national security, while Romney has the advantage on reducing the national debt. The majority of voters in Colorado say the economy is their top issue in the November, but are evenly split over which candidate would be better at handling the economy.

Colorado's unemployment rate, at 8.1 percent last month, is just below the national average.

The Obama campaign is seeking to rally support among Colorado's growing numbers of Hispanics and young people, two groups where the president has an edge over Romney. The presumptive GOP nominee sees an opportunity to make up ground in the state's traditionally Republican rural areas. His campaign is also hoping to appeal to middle-class voters in the vast Denver suburbs, who may be unhappy with the economy.

However, Obama has an advantage among this group's key segment: suburban women.

Obamacare to unleash crushing new taxes, trillions in debt, huge job losses, and it doesn't even cover natural medicine

(NaturalNews) By now, we all know the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate portion of Obamacare by declaring it a "tax." This is, in essence, a declaration that the federal government now has unlimited power to force consumers to spend some (or even all) of their take-home pay on various products, services or even intellectual property that they have no interest in buying in the first place. It is a concentration of economic power in the hands of the federal government, and it suddenly ends economic liberty in America (http://www.naturalnews.com/036329_Obamacare_Supreme_Court_economic_fr...).

It's also the largest tax increase in the history of the United States. By upholding Obamacare's individual mandate as a "tax," Chief Justice Robert just labeled President Obama the largest tax increase President in the history of the country! (http://decoded.nationaljournal.com/2012/06/roberts-labels-obama-a-tax...)

And yet President Obama himself declared the individual mandate was NOT a tax. Here's the video: http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/video?id=8620606

And here's the transcript of his interview with George Stephanopoulos:
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2009/09/obama-mandate-is-not-a-t...

But now, of course, Chief Justice Roberts has declared it IS a tax, after all. Thus, Obama's key legislative achievement has become the single greatest legislative deception in the history of America.

How much will this new tax cost you? The Washington Post has published a handy online calculator:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/what-health-bil...

It shows that the new tax begins in 2014, then ramps up to its maximum penalty at 2016, at which point you are taxed year after year until you cave in and buy into the monopoly Big Pharma health insurance scam. This is, for the record, the largest tax increase in history. And it's for a system of medicine which is a Big Pharma monopoly that doesn't even give consumers the freedom to choose natural medicine or alternative therapies!

The high court's ruling leaves in place 21 tax increases in the health-care law costing more than $675 billion over the next 10 years, according to the House Ways and Means Committee. Of those, 12 tax hikes would affect families earning less than $250,000 per year, the panel said, including a "Cadillac tax" on high-cost insurance plans, a tax on insurance providers, and an excise tax on medical device manufacturers. (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jun/28/republicans-ruling-fo...)

Now that Obamacare's penalty is a "tax," not a "fee," Mr. Obama is breaking a 2008 campaign pledge not to raise taxes on Americans earning less than $250,000. This new "tax" will hit across the economic spectrum, despite his campaign declaration that health care should "never be purchased with tax increase on middle-class families." Now, Mr. Obama and congressional Democrats have enacted the largest tax increase in history.

For the record, under the precedent now set by the U.S. Supreme Court, the federal government can simply order you to engage in whatever commerce the government chooses. All they have to do is create a penalty for refusing to go along with their order, and characterize the penalty as a "tax."

Ron Paul gets it. He understands the simple truth that the government has no power to compel people to engage in commerce. "The insurance mandate clearly exceeds the federal government's powers under the interstate commerce clause found in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution," writes Ron Paul. "This is patently obvious: the power to 'regulate' commerce cannot include the power to compel commerce! Those who claim otherwise simply ignore the plain meaning of the Constitution because they don't want to limit federal power in any way. The commerce clause was intended simply to give Congress the power to regulate foreign trade, and also to prevent states from imposing tariffs on interstate goods. In Federalist Paper No. 22, Alexander Hamilton makes it clear the simple intent behind the clause was to prevent states from placing tolls or tariffs on goods as they passed through each state -- a practice that had proven particularly destructive across the many principalities of the German empire." (http://lewrockwell.com/paul/paul799.html)

Obamacare is going to absolutely shred the infrastructure of our medical system, it is going to send health insurance premiums soaring, it is going to dramatically expand the size and the scope of government, it is going to fundamentally alter the relationships between doctors and their patients and it is one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history. Not only that, it is also going to add about a trillion dollars to our national debt over the next decade. So no, the Obamacare decision is not good news. Obamacare was one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history, and now we are stuck with it.
http://endoftheamericandream.com/archives/15-reasons-why-the-obamacar...What are the political ramifications of all this? Obamacare remains widely hated by much of the U.S. population -- at least the portion of the population that actually works for a living -- and this Supreme Court decision will likely ruffle even more feathers of taxpayers who are tired of being pick-pocketed by the federal government at every turn. While most people don't mind paying some reasonable level of tax to the feds, having the government invade your take-home pay and start forcing you to spend it on things you may or may not want is another thing entirely.

Because of the backlash against this law, it seems almost certain that this Supreme Court decision will play right into the hands of Mitt Romney, who will now make repealing Obamacare the centerpiece of his election campaign. He has already stated, in the Weekly Standard, "If We Want to Get Rid of Obamacare, We're Going to Have to Replace President Obama." (http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/romney-if-we-want-get-rid-obamaca...)

But even if Obama is replaced in the White House, the damage has already been done. With its decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has set a precedent of government control over private paychecks, and that precedent has fundamentally crushed economic freedom in America and opened the door to limitless taxes for everything imaginable. King George III couldn't have done it better.

Nevertheless, based on this decision I now predict a sweeping victory for Republicans in the 2012 elections as a backlash against Obamacare. I'm not saying I support Romney or the Republicans, because I think all politicians are crooks for the most part, and I agree with Gov. Jesse Ventura that the two-party system is largely just two criminal gangs jockeying for power on how they can exploit the people they claim to represent. Whether it's DemoCRIPS or ReBLOODlicans in power, they're all political gangstas.

Even if Romney takes office next January, actually repealing Obamacare would be almost impossible to achieve, by the way. Unraveling bad laws is far more difficult than getting them passed in the first place. It would take a true taxpayer revolt to pull it off.

We may be headed for that sooner than you think, by the way. With this decision to seize control of the money right out of your own paycheck, the moral collapse of the U.S. government is now complete. Once this "tax" starts to come due, many taxpayers will be in a state of near revolt. That, coupled with the economic collapse heading our way from the EU, will bring many Americans to a point of financial desperation.

It is from such conditions that, historically, revolutions emerge. And that's assuming we even make it to 2014 when the Obamacare tax is supposed to be levied on the American people. By some estimates, the U.S. government may suffer a crushing financial collapse between 2012 and 2015. If the government collapses, Obamacare and all the other bad laws go down with it: the Patriot Act, the DMCA, the NDAA, and so on. That's the one interesting thing about human history: Every time governments become too large, too bloated and too deeply invested in crushing liberty, the People eventually rise up against the injustices and take their country back, starting with a clean slate (which eventually becomes corrupt a few years later, of course).

It is the cycle of human civilization... the rise and fall of civilizations. We are living in the time of the fall of the American empire, and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Hope you're ready to live in "interesting times," because we all have a front row seat to history in the making.

Nintendo confirms bigger Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL ? Video Games ...

When Nintendo announced the bigger 3DS XL last week, it had a chance to rectify what seemed to be an oversight with the original hardware: there was no second thumbstick.

You could argue Nintendo didn?t think the handheld needed one for a while, but then the Circle Pad Pro peripheral was introduced for the 3DS, which added a second thumbstick next to the main buttons on the right. It may have a 480 hour battery life, but it doesn?t exactly look great when attached.

So if games are being made that utilize two thumsticks, and you?re introducing a new iteration of your hardware, wouldn?t you integrate the second stick as a standard feature? Nintendo decided not to, but has now stated a new version of the Circle Pad Pro will be released for use with the 3DS XL.

Nintendo confirmed what is likely to be called the Circle Pad Pro XL in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. I?m guessing it?s also going to mean spending another $20 to acquire one when it launches later this year. Having it bundled with a game is out of the question as there?s now two versions of the peripheral.

What remains to be seen is whether it has a negative impact on holding the 3DS XL, which is already much bigger than the original 3DS. It?s also going to make remaining portable with the handheld that much more difficult as cases won?t support it.

Maybe Nyko will come to the rescue with an updated Power Grip Pro that offers up screen protection and additional battery life, too.

(AP) ? Hackers broke into a prominent Russian opposition leader's Twitter and email accounts, sending his followers abusive messages.

Alexei Navalny's spokeswoman, Anna Veduta, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Navalny is not going to create new accounts, and warned his quarter of a million Twitter followers that the stream of abuse is fake.

Among the many changes, hackers wrote "Alexei Navalny is a crook and thief 2.0" in his profile.

"I'm disbanding my sect, but I'm not going to give you your money back because I need it to party in Mexico, so you can all go to hell," one tweet read.

Veduta said Navalny "hopes to regain access to his accounts" eventually.

The 36-year-old opposition leader has been at the forefront of protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin. His home and office were raided and he was interrogated several times as part of a probe into violence at a May 6 opposition rally.

Navalny linked the hackings to his personal computer and iPad being seized by police in a raid on his apartment on June 11.

The Investigative Committee on Tuesday brushed off Navalny's accusations of being instrumental in the hacking, describing them as "an attempt to discredit the investigators."

Navalny reiterated in a message posted on Facebook, verified by the AP, that he is "sure that the hacking was performed with the help of seized hardware" and pledged to demand that the hackers be found and charged.

Faced with a choice of unfollowing the opposition leader or putting up with a flood of abusive tweets, Navalny's followers seem to be opting for the former. Their number dwindled from over 258,000 early Tuesday morning to under 254,000 late afternoon Moscow time.

The hacking of Navalny's account follows the lawyer's election to the board of directors of Russia's largest airline, Aeroflot, on Monday.

Navalny was nominated by tycoon Alexander Lebedev, whose holdings include 15 percent of Aeroflot. Navalny's nomination was also supported by proxy advisory firms who work for minority shareholders.

6 ways Emma Stone lays on the charm

Carlos Alvarez / Getty Images

By Cody Delistraty

Emma Stone has had a slew of red carpet appearances and interviews lately to promote ?The Amazing Spider-Man,? but it?s been nothing but a breeze for the charismatic actress.

It seems no one?is immune to her understated beauty?and self-deprecating charm. In fact, her New York Magazine profile was so glistening that some article commenters lambasted its ?girl crush? tone. Her fashion sense has been the center of envious attention, and her off-screen relationship with her "Spider-Man" co-star Andrew Garfield (which she?s reticent to publicly discuss) seems to be going swimmingly.

Clearly, Stone is doing?something right. Taking a page out of Dale Carnegie?s famous self-help book, ?How to Win Friends and Influence People,? she?s smiling, listening and appreciating her rise to the ("Easy") A-list, making us fall deeper in love with her one step at a time.

From her PowerPoint-fueled Hollywood start to her humble rise to success, here are six ways that Emma Stone has won us over:

Ambitious adolescence
At 14, Stone enrolled as a freshman at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz.,?but she wanted to go to Los Angeles to be in the movies. So, as she recounted to Blackbook Magazine,?one day she hurried home, made a PowerPoint entitled "Project Hollywood 2004," set it to Madonna?s ?Hollywood? and used it to convince her parents to let her drop out of school and move to L.A. to audition for film and TV. Her mother stayed with her, homeschooling the Scottsdale, Ariz., native through high school.

Discerning choice of roles
Although ?The Amazing Spider-Man? will likely be the role that reaches the biggest audience, her success has been climbing ever since she starred as the heart-meltingly hot high-school dream girl Jules in ?Superbad.? She honed her comedic chops alongside co-star Jonah Hill before showing that con artists can be silly and sexy in ?Zombieland,??and then, drum roll please, ?Easy A? and??Crazy, Stupid, Love? helped perfect her smart, sexy, wry sense of humor which she followed with a serious turn in "The Help," establishing?a?hilarious, serious, various?persona?for the Emma Stone?we now know and love. ? ?

Trailer for "The Amazing Spider-Man," in which Emma Stone plays Gwen Stacy. Opens July 3.

Self-deprecating humor
The way Stone combines her sarcastic humor with real vulnerability has proven to be her siren song. Her turn as Olive Penderghast, a?high-school student who video?diaries her misunderstood "Scarlet Letter"-inspired life in "Easy A,"?allowed Stone to showcase a witty, cultured,?willing-to-be-humbled character?who's nothing but?unforgettable.?We hope she won?t use?her?siren song?to crash us into a cliff, though, because when she turns on the comedic charm, it?s impossible to look away.

Approachability
Between press tours, filming, photo shoots, interviews and maintaining some semblance of a personal life, the natural blonde seems nothing like the average 23-year-old. But compared to the likes of Angelina Jolie or Sean Penn -- who are off?doing good in?Cambodia and Haiti, respectively -- her stateside sensibility lends?itself to greater?approachability and relatability. We're sure she'll take up a cause or two when she's older and more firmly entrenched in the Hollywood elite, but for now, Stone?s youthful, live-in-the-Hollywood moment?sensibility?is a surprisingly?appreciated repose from the busy, hyperaffluent, seemingly out-of-touch movie star we're used to.

Understated (yet unbelievable) looks
Sony Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper noted that with red hair, Stone looks less?like ?someone who will steal your boyfriend,? according to New York Magazine. But whether she?s a redhead, blonde or brunette, the actress, who?s now?the new face of Revlon, could steal a boyfriend or two?sporting any hair color. ?The pretty thing ... it was never a value to me growing up,? she told the magazine, adding that she signed with Revlon so young girls would know they don?t have to look like models to be beautiful.?To?judge for yourself whether she doesn't have?the looks of a model,?here are a?few of her?"Spider-Man" red carpet looks.?(For the record, yes, she's model material.)

She?s not the center of the world (but she is)
Perhaps the most refreshing?-- although most?difficult to believe?-- quality of Stone is that she isn?t too interested in herself or in?sharing her stories. ?I freak out having a Facebook? she told New York Magazine, noting that she only wants her closest friends to know the most personal details of her life, specifically concerning Garfield. Yet, considering the fact that?her face seems to dominate the newstand (now on the?July?Vogue cover), if she wanted to tell story after self-centered story, we're sure millions would be glad to perk up and listen.

Tune into the TODAY show Tuesday for an interview with Emma Stone. Check your local listings for air time.

Keeping on top of your accounts is vital for any small business. Take a look at our top accounting tips for SMEs to see how you can make sure your business is in the best financial shape it can be.

accounting tips

1. Open a business account

When you start your small business you should open a separate bank account for it. This will make it far easier for you to keep track of your finances and will help you reconcile your bookkeeping figures with the amount in your account.

2.?? ?Keep up-to-date with your bookkeeping

Reconcile your books and accounts regularly to avoid any accounting errors. Try to check your books on a weekly or monthly basis. If you?re using online accounting software, make sure you regularly back up your financial information. Keep your paper accounts in good order ? it may even be worth scanning any paper records to keep electronic versions. Make sure you log every expense and every piece of income

3.?? ?Produce a monthly cash flow statement

By producing a regular cash flow statement, you will be able to see exactly what state your accounts are in. This will make it far easier when you come to submit your Tax Return as you will have all your figures and documents in place. It will also help you to keep track of how much you are spending and whether you are overspending in any area, as well as helping you to see trends such as seasonal increases and decreases in profit.

4.?? ?Research whether you?re entitled to pay less tax

Find out if you are entitled to any tax relief as a small business owner. There are some circumstances in which it may be possible for you to pay less tax. These are if you are entitled to Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, buying equipment to use in your business, research and development tax reliefs and direct investment incentives.

5.?? ?Look into accounting software

Consider using accounting software to help you keep your accounts in good order. This can often save you time and money.

6.?? ?Think about hiring an accountant

Consider hiring a business accountant. Do your research and make sure whoever you use is registered to an official accountancy body or organisation.

7.?? ?Invoice as soon as possible

Ensure that you send an invoice out within 24 hours of a service being delivered, as some businesses have a 30 day or even 60 day payment cycle. If you delay sending an invoice by even just a couple of days you may face a long wait to be paid, which can impact the rest of your business.

8.?? ?Have a range of payment options

Try to make things as easy as possible for all involved by having a range of payment options available to your clients. Consider introducing online payments, such as PayPal, and credit cards, which may incur a small cost, but could help prevent cash flow problems.

Egypt stirs Islamist joy, Gulf, Israeli doubts

LONDON (Reuters) - Egypt's new president may lack real foreign policy clout for now, but the mere fact that a Muslim Brotherhood man is at the helm of the biggest Arab nation will embolden fellow Islamists seeking revolutionary change around the Middle East.

Mohamed Mursi's tenure as head of state is likely to unsettle Israel, please the Jewish state's arch-foe Iran, and dismay secularist critics of the Brotherhood at home and abroad who argue that political Islam is no antidote to unemployment, a flatlining economy and social misery, analysts say.

It will also stir misgivings among some Gulf Arab states still struggling to respond effectively to the ousting of their long-term ally, deposed president Hosni Mubarak.

Analysts say any variations in aid flows from the Gulf may be an indicator of the health of their relationship with Cairo.

"Mursi's victory will not benefit us directly. But it is a symbol of a victorious revolution," Abu Yazen, an activist from the Syrian city of Hama, the repeated scene of bloodshed during Syria's 15-month-old uprising, told Reuters.

"Mursi and his victory illustrates that revolutionaries will not rest until they reap the rewards of their work," he added.

Mustapha el-Sayed, political science professor at Cairo University, said Mursi's victory in presidential elections confirmed a trend started in Tunisia "that the political force most likely to come to power in most Arab states after the fall of their regimes is the Islamists."

The Brotherhood, the world's oldest and most established contemporary Islamist movement, has wide influence in the Arab world even if, like in Egypt, its followers have often been repressed in Muslim-majority countries.

After wins by Islamists at legislative polls in Tunisia and Morocco, Mursi's election is prompting the world to think again about how it deals with advocates of Islamic rule.

But the Egyptian military is expected to keep a tight rein on foreign policy and will protect a peace treaty with Israel that brings in $1.3 billion of U.S. military aid a year.

As a result, the ability of the Mursi government to provide immediate material support to kindred political forces in other Arab countries may be limited.

COLDER PEACE WITH ISRAEL

And in any case, his urgent tasks will be at home, namely to bring Egyptians the stability and prosperity they are desperate for after stagnation and corruption under Mubarak, followed by 16 months of crisis.

But his focus on domestic affairs will not stop critics of the Brotherhood from looking on with trepidation.

Israeli officials have said they respect the election result and expect Cairo to continue to preserve the treaty. But Former Israeli Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said in an interview with Israel Radio that while the peace treaty would continue, it would be "much colder" in future.

"There's not a shadow of a doubt we have awoken to a new world, a different world, a world that is more religious, Islamist and anti-Israel. ... the man is known for his extremist views against the peace treaty with Israel," Ben-Eliezer said.

The Sunni Brotherhood, whose Palestinian offshoot Hamas rules the Gaza Strip, is strongly critical of Israel, which has watched the rise of Islamists in Egypt with growing concern.

Hamas hopes a Mursi presidency would loosen the economic shackles of a boycott of Gaza that Israel says is meant to stop the flow of arms to Gaza.

"The question is how Western states react, if they isolate Hamas further and keep trying to squeeze them out of power, then of course Hamas will turn to the Brotherhood for support, it is only logical," said Michael Stephens, researcher at the Royal United Services Institute based in Doha.

"They're a pragmatic party that takes help from anybody they can get."

Britain's Quilliam think tank said a topic to watch closely was increased rocket attacks from Sinai which "could destabilize the relationship between Egypt and Israel, particularly if Israel seek unilateral action inside Egyptian territory."

MURSI WIN LIKELY TO INFLUENCE LIBYA

In Libya it is still unclear how well the Muslim Brotherhood-linked party, the Justice and Construction Party, will do in Libya's first free elections slated for July 7 because the organization does not enjoy the same institutional popularity that it does in Tunisia or Egypt.

But experts and Libyan liberals alike believe that the Brotherhood win in Egypt will boost the confidence of their Libyan counterparts.

"The Brotherhood in Libya will see it not just as a victory for Egypt but a victory for the Brotherhood (generally)," said political scientist Omar Ashour.

He said if the Libyan Brotherhood were successful in Libya, an oil producer with big financial reserves, their Egyptian counterparts would look to them for contracts and opportunities to help the Egyptian economy through its struggles.

In Libya, secularists watch Mursi with some concern.

Watching a re-run of the Egyptian president's speech on a news channel this morning in his office, Mahmoud Jibril, Libya's wartime rebel prime minister who resigned last October told Reuters that Mursi's win in Egypt would "definitely" boost the Libyan branch of the Brotherhood.

"It makes our task here as democratic forces calling for a civil state and calling for equal rights for all Libyans, and calling for a real democratic process much harder," he said.

Gulf Arab states have reacted warily to Mursi's win.

Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution Doha branch said Mursi's win represented the first time an Islamist party had risen to the presidency in the Arab world.

"There is a symbolic power that is surely concerning to Gulf leaders especially those in Saudi and the Emirates because they are increasingly concerned about their own Islamist opposition."

GULF ARABS SEEN PREFERRING 'WEAK" EGYPT

Noman Benotman, a senior analyst at Quilliam, said Gulf states wanted the "weak Egypt" they were used to under Mubarak and did not want to regain the diplomatic weight it had in the 1950s and 1960s during the heyday of Arab nationalism.

"The Brotherhood is the group with the soft power and the influence to be able to revive Egypt and make it, once again, the most influential country in the Middle East," he said.

"Watch the economic cooperation with the Gulf. Will they fulfill the projects they have promised? I suspect not."

Hamid of Brooking said Gulf states would use economic clout to pressure the Brotherhood. "Egypt is going to need assistance - loans, foreign direct investment -- and the Gulf leaders, if they're smart, will use that to their own benefit," he said.

Emboldened by the growing clout of Islamists elsewhere, members of Islah, or Reform, in the United Arab Emirates have stepped up demands for greater power to go to a semi-elected advisory council.

"It's great, let the Islamists win, let them be demystified and show that they don't have a special warrant to create jobs, or resolve the Palestinian issue -- they are just regular guys," said Mishaal al-Gergawi, an Emirati political analyst.

"Jobs, the economy, society, identity -- all these issues that people are worried about in the Gulf, Islamists don't have an advantage in addressing these," he said.

Aspirin may not prevent blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes among diabetics

Aspirin may not prevent blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes among diabetics [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 24-Jun-2012

Many patients with type 2 diabetes may be aspirin resistant. That means the standard aspirin dose may not protect them against blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes among diabetics, a new clinical study finds. The results will be presented Sunday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"This result adds to our understanding of the prevalence of this problem, which varies considerably among studies," said lead author Subhashini Yaturu, M.D., section chief of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Department at Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY. "The standard baby aspirin may not be adequate for subjects with diabetes for cardiovascular protection."

Low doses of aspirin are recommended for the prevention of strokes and heart attacks. Aspirin is considered the usual treatment to prevent dangerous blood clots from forming. It is recommended for patients with diabetes and other high-risk medical conditions. In some cases, however, patients are resistant to aspirin's anti-clotting effects. This resistance can be identified by measuring the level of a particular chemical called 11-dehydro-thromboxane beta-2, or 11DhTx2, which is formed during the clotting process. High urinary levels of this chemical indicate resistance to aspirin and its beneficial anti-clotting effects.

The most common form of diabetes, type 2, affects nearly 11 million people age 65 and older in the United States, according to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse. The leading causes of death among people with this disease are heart disease and stroke.

In this clinical study, investigators found that more than half53 percentof study participants with type 2 diabetes were aspirin resistant. In addition, 11DhTx2 levels were greater among patients with a longer duration of diabetes and increased urinary levels of a particular protein, called micro albumin, an indicator of early kidney disease in diabetes. At the same time, 11DhTx2 concentrations were not associated with insulin levels, insulin resistance, or certain markers of inflammation.

High blood pressure and abdominal-fat distribution are associated with the risk of heart and blood-vessel disease. A surprising finding, according to Yaturu, was that patients with relatively higher blood-pressure readings and a greater waist circumference had lower 11DhTx2 measurements, compared to other patients.

"These results provide new information about the factors associated with aspirin resistance," Yaturu said. "This may help doctors identify people who are likely to be aspirin resistant, so that higher doses or different drugs can be prescribed to prevent blood clots. Further studies are required to clarify the appropriate dose of aspirin and or other therapies for subjects with diabetes to prevent clots. "

Participants included 142 male patients with type 2 diabetes. Their average age was 48 years, and most were Caucasian. The samples for this clinical study were collected at Overton Brooks VAMC, Shreveport, LA between 2006 and 2009 and funded by a VA Merit Review grant for a separate study entitled, "Effect of Pioglitazone on Bone density and bone markers." For the study of aspirin resistance, supplemental analyses of the samples were carried out at Stratton VAMC and Research Pharmacy Institute at Albany. The residual funds from the Merit Review grant partly supported the study.

David Meerman Scott: Penn State University: Poor Crisis Management and Social Media Skills

The jury reached a verdict in the high-profile Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse trial. Sandusky, a former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach was found guilty on 45 of 48 charges. Sandusky faces potentially hundreds of years in prison for molesting 10 boys over 15 years.

The story has been at the forefront of the news cycle many days since it broke in November 2011. There are many parts of this difficult story that have been analyzed for months in the media.

I wanted to take a look at a part of the story that has not gotten much attention -- the social media and crisis communications aspects.

Imagine you are responsible for social media within an organization faced with a major crisis like this one. How would you handle it? How would the senior executives handle it?

I spoke with Kelly Burns, a recent Penn State MBA graduate. While a student, Burns interned with Penn State Football Marketing & Promotions from May 2009 through April 2012, and for the past three summers (2009-2011) she ran the Penn State Football Facebook and Twitter accounts.

"I was very lucky to have the opportunity to assist in developing the Penn State Football Facebook page back when it first launched in summer 2009," Burns says. She posted content (information, photos, videos, and the like) that fans enjoyed. "Having the opportunity to interact with Penn State Football fans was incredible because Penn State Football has a history rich in tradition and 'Success with Honor,' and its fans literally wear their pride on their sleeves." The Penn State Football Facebook page, currently with nearly 350,000 likes, targeted students, recruits to the football program, alumni, and Penn State football fans in the community.

Then the story broke

The grand jury investigation was initiated in the spring of 2008 but had been kept quiet. In the summer of 2011 Burns was told to remove photos of Sandusky from the Facebook page. And then the social media team was told to stop posting onto Facebook on October 16, 2011.

On November 4, 2011 Sandusky was indicted and the next day he was arrested and charged and the story went worldwide instantly. "Our Facebook and @PennStateFball Twitter lit up but that was difficult because initially we were not allowed to post," Burns says. "We were not permitted to post anything about the scandal, nor were any other people working for the University. We were told to wait until Old Main [Penn State's administrative center on campus which includes the university president's office] made a statement before we could say anything. So we went completely dark."

On November 11, the social media team was permitted to post about The Blue Ribbon Campaign against child abuse and then on November 16 they were allowed to post some simple messages about football but still nothing about the crisis itself was allowed. Even today, nothing about the scandal has ever been talked about on Penn State social media.

What should have happened

The right approach is to be honest and forthright. Communicate the facts quickly and don't hide. Assign a visible spokesperson. Silence and "no comment" are the enemy.

These steps were not taken at Penn State Football. Burns says it took weeks before the Board of Trustees issued responses and put a face to leadership.

"We should have done a better job providing a way to communicate with the fans," Burns says. "That's not something critical about Penn State Football because it goes up to Old Main, who decided what was allowed to be said. I think in our day and age of social media, that silence was not the right response. Keeping information private is not the way to go when people are talking 24x7 on social media and need reassurance."

Interestingly, Burns says that Penn State Football social media, even today, is not back to "business as usual" like it was before the scandal broke. Currently the football accounts are being updated infrequently by Penn State athletics staff only with innocuous press release type content and the fan engagement is minimal as a result.

"At Penn State, there was no crisis management plan in place whatsoever," Burns says. "I think it's crucial for organizations to have crisis management plans with a social media component. Set up timetables to issue responses and statements. You need a plan so that people know how to communicate."

Crisis communications plans need to be open ended so they are appropriate for any situation that might arise. Too many crisis plans only look at a few scenarios and people freeze up when the actual crisis is something they hadn't thought of.

Burns' internship ended several months ago. She says that the crisis experience was terrible in many ways and was certainly *not* fun in the time since the scandal broke. But it was a tremendous learning experience. "I just wish things had turned out differently. Even today they are not communicating openly. It remains to be seen if Penn State Football will address the verdict and engage with fans again now."

Here is the official statement released by Penn State University immediately following the verdict.
