Over a dozen races, two car shows and British Invasion highlight weekend activities
DUBLIN, OHIO (June 18, 2012) ? Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is hosting the Mechanics Bank Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio this weekend, June 22-24, 2012.The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) will race for the 30th time at the Lexington, Ohio track, showcasing historic race cars from many eras of motorsports. The cars on track will range from a 1959 Elva Courier to a 2006 Ford GT MKVII. There are three dozen entries hailing from the Buckeye State. Car enthusiasts will gather at Mid-Ohio to enjoy a weekend full of vintage car racing. There will be eighteen SVRA group races, a British Invasion race, a BMW/Alfa/Datsun race and two Enduros (hour-long multi-class races).
New to the fold this year is title sponsor Mechanics Bank, which is Richland County?s (Ohio) only home-owned financial institution.
?SVRA and the vintage event has been a staple at Mid-Ohio for 30 year which is more than half of the track?s history. Adding Mechanics Bank to event as title sponsor is a great addition and sign of support from the community and we know they are as excited as we are to get this event rolling,? said Craig Rust, president of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
A British Invasion will be celebrated as the Featured Marque of the event. Owing to the long and rich history of British car manufacturing, the Featured Marque designation was expanded to more than just one manufacturer in 2012. From Jaguars to Bentleys, Range Rovers to Rolls Royces, British cars are defined by their attention to detail. Join us this weekend for the chance to see British-label car racing and shows.
Professional racer Tom Yeager will be the Grand Marshal for this year?s Mechanics Bank Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Tom began his racing career in Marion, Ohio, racing the city streets in a lowered 1950 Mercury. Yeager turned professional in 1966 through SCCA?s Trans-Am series, where he and his co-driver Bob Johnson won at Virginia International Raceway and Mid-America Raceway. Currently, he competes in SVRA events in a number of cars such as Mustangs, Brabhams and more.
Off-track, Saturday?s British Car Showdown and Sunday?s Concours d?Elegance will take over the infield with hundreds of cars expected to enter in each. Annually, both shows are typically one of the largest of their kind in the region.
Daily tickets for the Vintage Grand Prix begin at $15 and weekend tickets are $30.
